Hamburg, 5 January 2018 – In its latest sustainability report, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) presents the HPA’s key focus areas and activities geared towards sustainable development in 2015 and 2016.
The 2015/2016 sustainability report refers to all organisational units of the HPA and the port, in particular the port land, as well as aspects that have an impact beyond the organisation. Compared to the 2013/2014 sustainability report it puts stronger emphasis on the port as a whole including examples of business associations, the port’s future ecological, economic and social viability and competitiveness, and the ability of the port infrastructure to withstand the impact of climate change.
In addition the report mentions, for the first time, the chainPORT Initiative founded in 2016 that goes beyond the sister port concept. smartPORT, a strategy to ensure efficient port operations through digitalisation, is once again a feature of the report. New features are the concrete goals that have been specified for 2020 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed upon in 2016, which have been developed to promote economic growth, social responsibility and the protection of the earth. The HPA relates its system of values to the SDGs, the OECD guidelines, and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and reports about the organisation’s progress.
“Acting sustainably is more important than ever. It is firmly entrenched in the HPA’s day-to-day operations,” says Jens Meier, CEO of the HPA. “A common understanding of what sustainability means, in general and with regard to the HPA’s operations, is the basis that ensures that acting sustainably is not considered an unwelcome duty, but a rewarding challenge.”
Deloitte & Touche GmbH audited the HPA’s sustainability report. It is published biennially both in German and English.
